Shannon Halligan, L-CAT Licensed Creative Arts Therapist
To develop the awareness that self-expression through art enhances quality of life.
What is an L-CAT?
An L-CAT is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist who is recognized by New York state as a qualified mental health provider of art therapy and psychotherapy.
If you are considering art therapy services for yourself or a loved one, you may be asking: How can Art Therapy help?
Art Therapy is a process that allows a client to be an active participant in their own healing and progress toward a healthier life. The process of being engaged in art activities can bring unconscious thoughts, feelings and ideas to the surface and help a person make connections and develop insight to their own problems and challenges.
Development of self-awareness, self-expression, and developing insight are key factors in leading a healthy and balanced life.
Art Therapy can be the bridge that allows a person to find their own path of healing and well-being.
Is a "talent" in art necessary to use art therapy?
There is no drawing, or other artistic ability required to utilize art therapy. Art Therapy focuses on the process of art-making rather than the perceived quality or "eye-pleasing" end product. By promoting hands-on exploration of materials, an Art Therapist facilitates the process of self-exploration, reflection and insight with the client. An Art Therapist will provide the art tools that will help a client get to a healthy place where they can heal and gain a stronger understanding of themselves.
Specialties include art therapy, play therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral-Therapy (CBT).
